Tolkien is incredibly descriptive and his books have aged incredibly well. You care enough about his characters to shed actual tears over them and rejoice in their triumphs. In my opinion Tolkien is the godfather of book series in which the world is so expansive and realistic and thoroughly created that the reader feels as if it actually existed. Tolkien takes the time to create languages (like elvish, which believe it or not, some people have actually learned how to speak), songs, histories, family trees, and more for the multitude of characters and races that fill his books. The scope of his books are grand beyond belief and yet is so richly executed that you never realize it. The movies make a great counterpart (especially the extended editions), and are the best book-to-movie adaptations of all time, in my opinion. If I had to rank these four books I would rank them as follows:
1. The Return of the King 2. The Two Towers 3. The Hobbit 4. The Fellowship of the Ring

The Harry Potter series is a collection of books near and dear to my heart. I have read the series twice through and read the final book three times! Rowling takes after J. R. R. Tolkien, and in my opinion makes her characters even more relate-able. These books have made me cry more than any others....except The Fault in Our Stars..... Anyways! This series also creates a world with such detail that you wish you could go there just to see all of the unique places, people, and creatures. The story-line is so well executed that it's actually better the second time around. There were several moments in the first two books that I had never noticed before I finished the series that gave evidence to the fact that Rowling knew where she was going with the ending pretty much from the start, and that's pretty impressive. The movies are also very good and great to watch with the whole family. If I had to rank these seven books I would rank them as follows: 1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince 3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban 4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix 6. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 7. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone |
